Among the accounts of his generosity, Shaqīq al-Balkhī said: I heard of a man in Kufa called Abū Ḥanīfa, went from Balkh to Kufa, met him and admired his speech. Walking behind him one day, we entered an alley and met a man who turned into another alley on seeing him. Abū Ḥanīfa followed and asked: “Why did you turn back when you saw me?” He answered: “I bought cloth from you for ten thousand dirhams and have not paid. I felt ashamed.” Abū Ḥanīfa said: “I give you those ten thousand, so that you need not feel ashamed before me over worldly goods.” Shaqīq said: I knew that he strove for religion, not the world, and remained with him until his death.
