I told him, ‘Prayer!’ He rose, alarmed, like a battered, bewildered man, and prayed noon and afternoon. Then he sat, placed his hand on his cheek, and stared. I left, then returned near sunset, and he remained in that condition. That was the last I saw of him.” I asked, “Do you think I can enter?” He replied, “I shall check for you; I have not seen him today.” He then came out to me and said, “He has turned his face to the wall. I greeted him, and he answered without turning his face.” I departed.

Then he asked them another question. Ibn Shubruma erred and Ibn Abī Laylā answered correctly. Ibn Abī Laylā said: A young camel, when yoked beside a mature one, cannot withstand the charge of mighty full-grown camels.

The judge ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad informed us: Abū Bakr al-Dāmghānī the jurist narrated to us: Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭaḥāwī narrated to us: I heard Ibn Abī ʿImrān say: I heard Muḥammad ibn Marwān al-Khaffāf—one of our school’s jurists—say: I heard Ismāʿīl ibn Ḥammād ibn Abī Ḥanīfa say: I held a document against a man for eight thousand dirhams. He paid me six thousand, leaving two thousand owing, which he denied. The judge then was Sharīk ibn ʿAbd Allāh. I brought the man before him and said, “May God honor the judge! I have a document against this man for eight thousand dirhams, of which I demand two thousand.” Sharīk said, “What is this talk? Would you, grandson of Abū Ḥanīfa, leave even two dirhams to anyone?” He made me leave. I went to al-Qāsim ibn Maʿn and told him my case. Al-Qāsim said, “You asked Sharīk to deal with something he does not understand. I will take care of him for you.” He met him and explained it. Then he met me and told me to appear before him. I did so and made the same claim as before. Sharīk said, “Yes, that is how to put it, grandson of Abū Ḥanīfa.” He asked for evidence; I brought my witnesses, and he ruled for me. When I wanted to appear before him, I had been kept back until I gave some dirhams to the man standing beside his head, who then brought me forward. I went to al-Qāsim ibn Maʿn and told him all this, saying, “I saw an objectionable thing in his session: the man standing beside him advances whomever he wishes and delays whomever he wishes. I was among those he advanced for dirhams he took from me.” He replied, “You too, Ismāʿīl, did something objectionable: you gave dirhams so that he delayed those who should have preceded you.” Sharīk was later dismissed and al-Qāsim ibn Maʿn appointed; Ismāʿīl was appointed after him. All these men judged in Kufa. Ismāʿīl additionally judged in all districts of Baghdad and in Basra. He remained there until paralysis afflicted him, and he wrote asking leave to depart, which was granted.

The teacher Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ḥafṣ said: Ḥammād ibn Abī Ḥanīfa said: A follower of Ghaylān arrived in Kufa from Syria. We debated him but could not refute him. Abū Ḥanīfa’s companions gathered and visited him. He said: “I have abandoned theological disputation.” We said: “This man will depart victorious if you do not debate him.” We persisted until he said: “Bring us together after Friday prayer in the house of ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth al-Qurashī.” People gathered until the roofs and courtyard were full; a carpet was laid in the middle, and the two sat. Abū Ḥanīfa said: “Ask what you wish.” The follower asked: “Tell me what God willed for Pharaoh.” He answered: “Disbelief.” “What did Satan will for Pharaoh?” “Disbelief.” “What did Pharaoh will for himself?” “Disbelief.” “What did Moses will for Pharaoh?” “Faith.” The follower said: “Moses’ will then opposed God’s will, while Satan’s and Pharaoh’s agreed with it.” Abū Ḥanīfa answered: “God willed that Satan should will disbelief for Pharaoh, that Pharaoh should will disbelief for himself, and that Moses should will faith for him. All of this is through God’s will.” The follower said: “You are right, and my position is refuted. May God reward you well for Islam and its people. Can I repent?” He answered: “Your repentance is to return to your land and turn them back from the error into which you led them.” Ḥammād said: He did this in Syria.

The teacher Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: Abū ʿIṣma said: Ḥammād ibn Abī Ḥanīfa said: When the Khārijites heard that Abū Ḥanīfa did not declare anyone an unbeliever for a sin, forty armed men came to Kufa and visited him among a large gathering. They asked him to dismiss the people because they had a question. When the people rose, the men drew their swords and said: “Enemy of this community! Devil of this community! Killing you is dearer to us than seventy years of jihad. Answer two questions, or prepare to be killed.” Abū Ḥanīfa said: “Sheathe your swords.” They answered: “How can we, when we want to stain them with your blood?” He said: “Speak, in God’s name.” They said: “Two funeral biers stand at the mosque door. One is a man who drank wine, choked and died. The other is a woman who committed adultery, became certain she was pregnant, drank a drug and killed herself. Are they believers?” He asked: “Were they Jews?” “No.” “Magians?” “No.” “Then what religion did they profess?” They said: “They bore witness that there is no god but God, that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger, and acknowledged what he brought.” He asked: “Is this statement part of faith?” “Yes.” “A third, a quarter or half of faith?” They answered: “Faith has no third, quarter or half: it is all of faith.” He said: “Why then question me about people whom you say professed all of faith?” They asked: “Are they destined for Paradise or the Fire?” He answered: “I say as Abraham said: ‘Whoever follows me belongs to me; whoever disobeys me, You are forgiving and merciful’ [Qurʾan 14:36]. We do not mean the disobedience of unbelief, because God never forgives unbelievers. And I say as Jesus said: ‘If You punish them, they are Your servants; if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise’ [Qurʾan 5:118], meaning those who died in faith after committing sins.” On hearing this, they laid down their weapons and said: “We disavow before God everything we followed and profess your religion. God has given you wisdom, knowledge, reason and merit.”
