He said: Abū Muṭīʿ al-Balkhī said: I saw Abū Ḥanīfa on Friday wearing a mantle and shirt worth four hundred dirhams, trailing on the ground. I asked: “Is this not disliked?” He answered: “No, the disapproval concerns the waistcloth, because of Ibn ʿUmar’s hadith: ‘Whoever’s waistcloth touches the ground, no prayer is accepted from him.’”

It is related that al-Awzāʿī said: “I prayed beside Abū Ḥanīfa. I raised my hands when bowing, but Abū Ḥanīfa did not. When I finished praying, he asked, ‘Why did you raise your hands when bowing?’ I replied: ‘Al-Zuhrī related to me, from Sālim, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of God raised his hands when bowing and when lifting his head.’”

Abū Ḥanīfa replied: “Ḥammād related to me, from Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, from ʿAlqama, from ʿUmar, that the Messenger of God raised his hands the first time and did not repeat it.” He then said: “Ḥammād is more learned in jurisprudence than [al-Zuhrī], Ibrāhīm more learned than Sālim, and ʿAlqama was no less than Ibn ʿUmar; and ʿUmar is ʿUmar.” Al-Awzāʿī was astonished.

Abū Ḥanīfa was asked about someone who says, “I am a believer, if God wills.” He said: “I heard from Mūsā ibn Abī Kathīr that Ibn ʿUmar told a man, ‘Slaughter my sheep.’ Before he slaughtered it, Ibn ʿUmar asked, ‘Are you a Muslim? Are you a believer?’ He answered, ‘Yes, if God wills.’ Ibn ʿUmar said: ‘Someone who doubts his faith must not slaughter my sacrificial animal.’” In another version he said, “Someone who doubts God, mighty and majestic.”
