ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī

Among his companions were also Ḥibbān and Mandal, the two sons of ʿAlī, Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, and Abū ʿĀṣim al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Makhlad. Al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī also learned jurisprudence from him.

Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm the Qurʾān reader informed us: The judge Abū Bakr Makram ibn Aḥmad related: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mughallis related: Naṣr ibn ʿAlī al-Jahḍamī related: One day I was with ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī. A man mentioned Abū Ḥanīfa and disparaged him. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd said: al-Aʿmash related to us, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās: God’s Messenger, peace and blessings upon him, said: “The people of Yemen will come to you. Their hearts are more tender and their inner selves gentler. Some people wish to lower them, but God insists on raising them.”

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṣayrafī informed us: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Miskī narrated to us: ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Kaʾs narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Maḥmūd the pharmacist narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Shujāʿ narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd said, “Only one of two men criticizes Abū Ḥanīfa: an ignorant man who does not know the excellence of his position, or an envious man who has not attained his knowledge and envies him.”

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Bazzāz informed us: Makram narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Dirhamī narrated to us in Basra, saying: Al-Khuraybī told us, “By God, Abū Ḥanīfa was more beneficial to Muslims than those two,” meaning Ḥammād ibn Salama and Ḥammād ibn Zayd.
