Among Abū Yūsuf's particular companions was al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Mālik. He was trustworthy in transmission, abundant in learning, and extensive in his transmissions. Abū Yūsuf likened him to a camel loaded beyond its capacity and driven through mud: its foreleg would go this way, and then its hind leg that way, before it returned. Ibn Shujāʿ learned from him and others.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Bazzāz informed us: Makram related to us: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Muḥammad related to us: Ibn Shujāʿ related to us: Muḥammad ibn Samāʿa related to me: Zufar and Abū Yūsuf sat in Kufa’s mosque. Zufar leaned against a pillar; he was composed and would sit upright without moving. When debating him, Abū Yūsuf moved about frequently until he came and sat before him, or he said near him. Zufar would say, “There are many doors here; if you want to flee, take whichever you wish.”

ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm informed us: Makram related to us: I was informed from Abū ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad ibn Muʾammal: Ibn Shujāʿ related to us: I heard Shuʿayb ibn Ḥarb say: I entered upon Dāwūd al-Ṭāʾī on a hot evening. He was in a room as hot as a bathhouse. It contained a brick and a water jar—I think he said buried. When the heat troubled us, we said, “Would you go out into the courtyard?” He said, “This is my portion; I seek reward for bearing it.” After a short time he told us to go out. We went to the courtyard and sat. He then said, “‘For them are iron maces’ [Qurʾan 22:21]. Whenever one of them wants to come out, the angel strikes him with the mace until it penetrates his liver or belly, then pus is poured over him.” He fainted before completing the phrase. He said this three times; then we left him.

Edition comparison
Substantive response to the heat
The older edition reads لحظي احتسبها (“my portion; I seek reward for it”). Baktāsh prints لخطأ لا احتسبها (“a mistake; I do not seek reward for it”). The English witnesses retain this important disagreement.
