Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī ʿĪsā ibn Māhān

Ḥamdān ibn Dhī al-Nūn related to us. He said: Shaddād ibn Ḥakīm related to us. He said: I said to Zufar ibn al-Hudhayl: “I heard Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī mention that Abū Ḥanīfa used to complete the Qurʾān thirty times a month, and sixty times in the month of Ramadan.” He replied: “Abū Jaʿfar spoke truly.”

ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Isḥāq al-Simnānī related to us. He said: Al-Khalīl ibn Hind al-Simnānī related to us. He said: ʿĪsā ibn Jaʿfar related to us, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm—God have mercy on them—from ʿĀʾisha, God be pleased with her, who said: The household of Muḥammad never ate their fill of wheat bread for three days.

And Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Ḥamduwayh al-Marwazī related to us. He said: Suwayd ibn Naṣr related to us, from ʿAbd Allāh. He said: Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī informed us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm—God have mercy on them— concerning a man whom three people approached, who said: “One of these is a fornicator.” He said: “He is not subject to a prescribed punishment.”

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd informed us. He said: Aḥmad ibn Tamīm ibn ʿAbbād al-Marwazī related to us. He said: Ḥāmid ibn Ādam informed us. He said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Jaʿfar al-Rāzī informed us. He said: I heard my father say: “I have seen no one more learned in jurisprudence than Abū Ḥanīfa.”

ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Isḥāq al-Simnānī related to us. He said: Al-Khalīl ibn Hind related to us. He said: ʿĪsā ibn Jaʿfar related to us, from Abū Jaʿfar, who said: What a distance there is between these people and Abū Ḥanīfa! He was beaten, tortured and threatened to make him accept the judgeship, but refused. He endured for God’s sake until they killed him, whereas some people eagerly sought to enter it and accepted it.
