حدثنا صالح بن سعيد الترمذي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن حرب، قال: حدثنا حفص بن عبد الله، قال: سمعت بكير بن معروف قال: كنت بطانة أبي حنيفة في الحضر والسفر، وأشهده في الليالي في منزله، وكان قلما يستتر علي من أموره، فما رأيت أحدًا أكثر اجتهادًا منه، صائمًا بالنهار، قائمًا بالليل، تاليًا لكتاب الله، خاشعًا دائبًا في طاعة الله، محتسبًا في التعليم وفي تنوير ما يشكل على الناس من المعاني، لا أقدر أن أصف كنه صفته، فرحمة الله عليه رحمة واسعة.

Ṣāliḥ ibn Saʿīd al-Tirmidhī related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥarb related to us. He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us. He said: I heard Bukayr ibn Maʿrūf say: I was an intimate companion of Abū Ḥanīfa at home and on journeys, and visited him at night in his house. Little of his affairs was concealed from me. I saw no one more diligent than he was: fasting by day, standing in prayer by night, reciting the Book of God, humble and unceasing in obedience to God, seeking reward in teaching and in illuminating meanings that people found difficult. I cannot describe the full reality of his qualities. May God have abundant mercy upon him.
