Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad related to us: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan related to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Mūsā related to us: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmayr—that is, Ibn Abī al-Gharīf—related to us: I heard Abū al-Zubayr al-Makkī, when Abū Ḥanīfa questioned him, say: Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us: Surāqa ibn Mālik asked the Prophet—God bless him and his family and grant him peace—‘Messenger of God, explain our religion to us as though we had just been born. Do we act in matters concerning which the pens have already run, or in something newly beginning?’ He said, ‘In that concerning which the pens have run and the decrees have been established.’ He said, ‘Messenger of God, what then is the point of acting?’ He said, ‘Act, for everyone is facilitated.’ Then he recited, ‘As for whoever gives and is mindful,’ through His words, ‘We shall facilitate for him the difficult way.’ He said, ‘Messenger of God, tell us: is this ʿumra of ours for this year or forever?’ He said, ‘No, rather forever.’
