Al-ʿAbbās ibn Ḥamza al-Naysābūrī related to us: Isḥāq ibn Abī Isrāʾīl related to us: Baqī ibn Yaḥyā related to us: A prominent hadith transmitter used to disparage Abū Ḥanīfa—may God be pleased with him. He was told, ‘Do not disparage him; he is among the best people of his time and the most learned in jurisprudence.’ Yet he did not stop disparaging him. Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—died, and those who prayed at his funeral were estimated at fifty thousand or more. He died away from home, poisoned, in Baghdad. The other man who used to disparage him died, and only eight people prayed over him, because a dreadful, reprehensible thing had been attributed to him.
The unnamed critic and unspecified accusation remain unnamed and unspecified; the account’s claims are those of its narrator.
