Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Hamadhānī al-Kūfī informed us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim related to us: [I heard my father:] He said: I heard Hishām ibn Mihrān say: Abū Ḥanīfa was seen in a dream as though opening the Prophet’s grave—God bless him and grant him peace. He sent someone to ask Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn. Ibn Sīrīn said, ‘Who is the person of this dream?’ and did not interpret it for him. He asked him a second time, and he said the same thing. He asked him a third time, and he said, ‘The person of this dream will bring forth knowledge in which no one before him has preceded him.’ Hishām said: Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—then understood and began to speak.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh related to us: Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥayyān related to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad related to us: Hishām ibn Mihrān related to us: Shabba ibn ʿIqāl—or ʿIqāl ibn Shabba—came to Sufyān al-Thawrī. Someone sitting with Sufyān began making room for him, but Sufyān told him, ‘Do not make room for him.’ The old man understood and said, ‘I go to Ibn Abī Laylā and he makes room for me; I go to Abū Ḥanīfa and he makes room for me. I come to you, and someone else makes room for me, but you forbid him!’ Sufyān lowered his head for a while, then raised it and said, ‘I fear that you may have occupied a position that made the Fire incumbent upon you.’
