حدثنا أحمد بن محمد الكوفي، قال: حدثني عبد الله بن أحمد بن بهلول، قال: هذا كتاب جدي إسماعيل بن حماد، فقرأت فيه: قال: حدثني أيوب بن عبد الله القصاب، وكان يبايت أبا حنيفة، ويساهر معه: أن أبا حنيفة رحمة الله عليه كان يصوم يوماً ويفطر يوماً، ثم سرد الصوم قبل وفاته، وكان يختم القرآن كل يوم، ويختم في رمضان كل يوم مرتين.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Kūfī related to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Bahlūl related to me: This is the book of my grandfather Ismāʿīl ibn Ḥammād. I read in it: He said: Ayyūb ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qaṣṣāb, who used to spend the night with Abū Ḥanīfa and stay awake with him, related to me: Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—used to fast on alternate days. Before his death he began fasting continuously. He completed the Qurʾān every day, and during Ramadan completed it twice each day.
