ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Muḥammad al-Jurjānī

Aḥmad ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Shujāʿ related to us. He said: I heard Ismāʿīl ibn Ḥammād say: We were with Abū Yūsuf when ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jurjānī entered. They discussed questions in the chapters on pledges. ʿAbd al-Karīm then left, and Abū Yūsuf said: “When this ʿAbd al-Karīm attended Abū Ḥanīfa’s gathering, those present benefited from his attendance—God have mercy on them. No man more learned in jurisprudence than he has come to us from Khurasan, followed by Khālid ibn Ṣubayḥ.” He said: “In difficult questions for which no transmission from Abū Ḥanīfa existed, we used to liken ʿAbd al-Karīm to Abū Ḥanīfa.”

ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Simnānī related to us. He said: Al-Khalīl ibn Hind related to us. He said: I heard Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh say: ʿAbd al-Karīm said: “My eyes have never seen anyone more learned than Abū Ḥanīfa.”

Qabīṣa ibn al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭabarī related to us. He said: Yaʿqūb ibn Yūsuf related to us. He said: Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Rāzī related to us, from ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jurjānī, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Abān ibn Abī ʿAyyāsh, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqama, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, God be pleased with him, who said: I watched the Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, in the odd-numbered prayer, and saw him perform qunūt before bowing.

Qunūt is a standing supplication within prayer.

ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Isḥāq al-Simnānī related to us. He said: Al-Khalīl ibn Hind al-Simnānī related to us. He said: Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh related to us, from ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Muḥammad. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from Simāk ibn Ḥarb, God have mercy on him, from Qābūs, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, God be pleased with him, who said: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, God be pleased with him, wrote to me that when a slave contracted to purchase his freedom dies while still owing some of the contractual payment, the balance of that payment is taken from his property and whatever remains belongs to his heirs.

ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us. He said: Al-Khalīl ibn Hind related to us. He said: Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh related to us, from ʿAbd al-Karīm, from Abū Ḥanīfa—God have mercy on them. He said: Yaḥyā ibn ʿAmr ibn Salama related to us, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, God be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever recites two verses from the end of Sūrat al-Baqara in a night, they suffice him.”

Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Sulaymān al-Marwazī, Abū Yaʿqūb Yūsuf al-Ghazzāl and more than one other related to us. They said: We heard Abū ʿIṣma say: Ismāʿīl and ʿUmar, the two sons of Ḥammād—or one of them—related to me, from ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jurjānī, from Abū Ḥanīfa, God have mercy on him, concerning a woman who is told her husband has died, observes the waiting period, marries and bears a child, after which her first husband returns. He said: “The woman is returned to the first husband, and the child belongs to the second husband.”

It was related to me from Muḥammad ibn al-Naḍr. He said: Muḥammad ibn Ziyād related to us. He said: Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh informed us, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan—God have mercy on them—from ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jurjānī, that he heard Abū Ḥanīfa, God be pleased with him, retract his first position and say: “The child belongs to the second.”
