Qays ibn Abī Qays related to us: Muḥammad ibn Ḥarb al-Marwazī related to us: Ismāʿīl ibn Ḥammād ibn Abī Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on them—related to us, from his father, who said: I saw al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra and my father reach a bridge. My father said to him, ‘Go ahead.’ He said, ‘I will not go ahead. You go ahead, for you are the most learned of us in jurisprudence, the most knowledgeable, and the best.’ He said: When my father died, we asked al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra to undertake washing him, and he did. After washing him, he said, ‘May God have mercy on you and forgive you. You did not break your fast for thirty years, nor rest your head on your right hand at night for forty years.’

Qays ibn Abī Qays related to us: Muḥammad ibn Ḥarb al-Marwazī related to us: Ismāʿīl ibn Ḥammād ibn Abī Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on the successors and predecessors—related to us, from his father, who said: I heard Abū Ṭālib the storyteller say: I said to Abū Ḥanīfa, ‘I tell stories to people and admonish them, but some people say storytelling is disapproved of. What do you think?’ Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—said, ‘Disapproved storytelling is to relate accounts of earlier people that have no known basis; to add to accounts or subtract [from them] to embellish your stories; to admonish people without taking heed yourself; or to remind people while your own heart is heedless. Apart from what I have described, familiar stories and accounts that have a basis in the Book, the Sunna, and accounts of earlier people are not disapproved of.’
