Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan, the author of the dictated sessions, related to us. He said: I heard Bishr ibn al-Walīd say: I heard Abū Yūsuf say: Abū Ḥanīfa had a close female relative for whom a question arose. She told him: ‘Go to Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and ask him.’ Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him, said: ‘The ruling is such-and-such.’ She said: ‘I am not satisfied with your view. Ask Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.’ Abū Ḥanīfa went to him and asked the question. He laughed and said: ‘You ask me, Abū Ḥanīfa, when we take questions from you?’ He said: ‘A relative sent me to you.’ He said: ‘State your view on the question.’ Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, stated it. He said: ‘I hold your view, so tell her that.’
