He said: ʿUmar ibn Dharr came to Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him, and said: ‘A Shīʿī neighbor of mine has a question but is embarrassed to come to you.’ He said: ‘Tell him to come.’ ʿUmar ibn Dharr came with the man, who said: ‘I told my wife: “You are forbidden to me.”’ Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him, said: ‘Your companion ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib’s view, may God be pleased with him, is that this counts as three.’ He said: ‘I do not want my companion’s view; I want yours.’ He said to me: ‘What did you intend by saying, “You are forbidden to me”?’ He said: ‘I intended nothing.’ He said: ‘You did not intend divorce?’ He said: ‘No.’ He said: ‘Nothing takes effect.’ The man said: ‘May God reward you well and grant you Paradise, even if I dislike it.’
