حدثنا العباس المروزي، قال: حدثني أبو يحيى كان يقال له زكريا الأشقر من أهل الإسكندرية، قال: سمعت عبدالرحمن بن القاسم الإسكندراني، قال: سمعت الليث بن سعد قال: بلغني أن أبا حنيفة يريد الحج، فخرجت إليه قاصدًا، فلقيته بمكة فسألته عن مسائل كثيرة في أبواب متفرقة، وسألته عن مسائل الجنايات، وعن قتل الخطأ وشبه العمد، فقال لي في بعض ما أجابني: وإن ضربه بأبو قبيس فقلت: فإن كان لا بد فبأبي قبيس، فقضينا المناسك، فرجعنا ثم بلغني بعد ذلك أنه يريد الحج فخرجت قاصدًا إليه، فلقيته فأردت أن آخذ عليه حرفًا واحدًا فما قدرت عليه، فلا أدري أندرت منه تلك الكلمة أو تكلم بحجة.

al-ʿAbbas al-Marwazi related to us; he said: Abu Yahya, who was called Zakariyya al-Ashqar, of the people of Alexandria, related to me; he said: I heard ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim al-Iskandarani say: I heard al-Layth ibn Saʿd say: I heard that Abu Hanifa intended to make the pilgrimage, so I set out expressly to meet him and met him in Mecca. I asked him many questions in various fields, and asked him about injuries, accidental killing and quasi-intentional killing. In one of his answers he said to me: Even if he strikes him with Abu Qubays. I said: If you must, then say 'with Abi Qubays.' We completed the rites and returned. Later I heard that he intended to make the pilgrimage, so I set out expressly to meet him and met him. I wanted to catch him in a single expression but could not. I do not know whether that word had slipped out of him or he had spoken with a justification.
The exchange concerns the grammatical forms Abu/Abi after the preposition 'with'. Abu Qubays is left as the proper name in the source; the translator does not decide whether the form was a slip or intentional.
