Ismāʿīl ibn Bishr related to us. He said: Muqātil ibn Ibrāhīm al-Fallās related to us. He said: I heard Abū Muʿādh Khālid ibn Sulaymān say: I was with Khārija ibn Muṣʿab when scholars and ascetics were mentioned. Khārija was asked: “Which would you prefer: to meet God Most High with Abū Ḥanīfa’s jurisprudence, or with ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād’s worship, may God have mercy on them?” He answered: “With sound intention and integrity, I would prefer to meet God with Abū Ḥanīfa’s jurisprudence.” Then Khārija said: “Abū Ḥanīfa is a test for the people of this world: through him, truth is distinguished from falsehood and soundness from infirmity.”

Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Sulaymān and another related to us. They said: I heard Saʿd ibn Muʿādh, Abū ʿIṣma, say: I heard Ibrāhīm ibn Rustam say: They said to Khārija ibn Muṣʿab: “You transmit from Abū Ḥanīfa, despite all those you have met?” He replied: “What should stop me? He is the spindle of the mill, around which the mill turns.”

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sarakhsī related to us. He said: ʿAlī ibn Naṣr—a shaykh of an earlier generation—related to us. He said: Khārija ibn Muṣʿab related to us. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us. He said: Yaḥyā ibn ʿAmr ibn Salama related to us, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, may God be pleased with him, attributing it to the Prophet, who said: “Whoever recites the two verses at the end of Sūrat al-Baqara, they will suffice him.”

Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Naysābūrī related to us. He said: Yazīd ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Yashkurī related to us. He said: Khārija ibn Muṣʿab related to us.

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us. He said: Khārija ibn Muṣʿab related to us. He said: Al-Mughīth ibn Budayl related to us. He said: Khārija related to us.

Also Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd al-Hamdānī informed us. He said: ʿUbayda ibn al-Shāh ibn ʿUbayd al-Harawī related to us. He said: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Saʿīd al-Madanī, related to us. He said: ʿAlī ibn Muṣʿab, the brother of Khārija ibn Muṣʿab, related to us, from Khārija ibn Muṣʿab, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Khālid ibn ʿAlqama, from ʿAbd Khayr, from ʿAlī, may God be pleased with him: He called for water, washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth three times, drew water into his nose three times, washed his face three times and each forearm three times, wiped his head once and washed his feet. Then he said: “This is the complete ablution of the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace.”

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us. He said: Khārija ibn Muṣʿab related to us. He said: Al-Mughīth ibn Budayl related to us. He said: Khārija related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from ʿAlqama ibn Marthad, from Sulaymān ibn Burayda, from his father: In a long account and the dream of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd: he saw in a dream the call to prayer twice and the iqāma twice. He related it to the Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, who said: “This is a true dream.”

Qays ibn Anīth related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Ḥarb related to us. He said: ʿAlī related to us. He said: Khārija ibn Muṣʿab related to us. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him, related to us. He said: I heard Sālim al-Afṭas say: “It has reached me that the graves of three hundred prophets surround the Kaʿba. No prophet fled from his people without taking refuge there until he died.”

Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Tirmidhī related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥayyān related to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Rustam, who said: I heard Khārija ibn Muṣʿab say: Among the Prophet’s Companions, peace be upon him, ʿUthmān completed the Qurʾān in a single unit of prayer; among the Successors, Saʿīd ibn Jubayr did so; and after the Successors, Abū Ḥanīfa.

Muḥammad ibn al-Layth ibn Saʿīd al-Sarakhsī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh, related to us. He said: Khārija ibn Muṣʿab related to us. He said: I heard al-Mughīth ibn Badīl say: I heard Khārija say: Abū Jaʿfar, Commander of the Believers, summoned Abū Ḥanīfa to make him chief judge. He refused him, so he imprisoned him for some days. Then he summoned him and said: “Abū Ḥanīfa! Why do you not enter our service? Why do you shun it, when men better than you have served?” Abū Ḥanīfa replied: “I am not fit—may God set you right—for judging.” He said: “You lie, Abū Ḥanīfa!” Abū Ḥanīfa said: “God is greatest! The Commander of the Believers has thus ruled that I am unfit.” He asked: “How?” He replied: “If I am lying, a liar is unfit; and if I am truthful, my excuse is clear.” Then ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd stood and said to him: “God Most High has given you the whole world. Buy yourself with part of it, and remember a night you will pass after which there is no further night.” Abū Jaʿfar became distressed and lowered his head. Al-Rabīʿ said to him: “You say this to the Commander of the Believers?” ʿAmr said: “This man has accompanied you for twenty years without offering you sincere counsel. Nothing from God’s Book or His Prophet’s practice has been acted upon at your gate.” He said: “What should I do? I summoned you, but you did not answer me.” ʿAmr replied: “Call us through your justice, and we will willingly assist you. At your gate are a thousand grievances. Redress one of them, and you will know that you are sincere.”

Muḥammad ibn al-Layth related to us, saying: I heard Khārija ibn Muṣʿab say: I heard Mughīth say: I heard Khārija say: I spent a hundred thousand in seeking knowledge, and a hundred thousand on people.
