حدثنا أبي، ومحمد بن عبد الله بن سهل، قالا: حدثنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن أحمد بن حفص، قال: سمعت حامد بن آدم، يقول: بلغني أن أصحاب أبي حنيفة كانوا يأتون سفيان فيناظرونه، فكان سفيان يتفقد ألفاظهم ويجيبهم على نحو ما سمع منهم، فأخبروا أبا حنيفة رضي الله عنه بذلك، فقال: ويحكم لا تعرفون أنه رجل كَيِّس يأخذ منكم، ولكن ألقوا عليه المسألة واسكتوا حتى يجيبكم، قال: فذهبوا إليه فألقوا عليه المسائل، وسكتوا عنه ربما أصاب، وربما أخطأ، فاغتمَّ بذلك، وكان [أبو حنيفة] يجلس بعد العتمة ويأتيه بعض أصحابه فيتناظرون، قال: فعمد سفيان فقنّع بكسائه فذهب إليهم شبه المتنكّر، فنام في ناحية المسجد يتسمّع إليهم، وهم لا يفطنون به، فإذا صار أصحاب أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليه وعليهم إليه يتناظرون يجيبهم جواباً حسناً كأنه كان معهم، فأخبروا أبا حنيفة فقال: هل هاهنا أحد معنا ينقل إليه ما نقول، قالوا: لا، ثم فطن أبو حنيفة بعد، فدخل سفيان فاستلقى في ناحية المسجد، وقد تقنّع بكسائه وأخرج أذنيه يتسمع إليه، ففطن أبو حنيفة له فذكر حديثاً وقال: حدثني سعيد بن مسروق الثوري والد هذا المسجَّى. فلما علم سفيان أنه فَطِنَ له قام فذهب. قال حامد بن آدم: فذكرت ذلك ليعلى بن عبيد الطنافسي فضحك، وقال: هذا عندنا مشهور وظاهر، وذكرت ذلك لمحمد بن عبيد فلم يقل شيئاً لم يقر ولم ينكر، وكان يؤمئذ مهموماً، فلا أدري لاهتمامه لم يُجب أو لغير ذلك؟

My father and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sahl related to us. They said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥafṣ related to us. He said: I heard Ḥāmid ibn Ādam say: I heard that Abū Ḥanīfa’s companions used to come to Sufyān and debate with him. Sufyān studied their wording and answered them along the lines of what he had heard from them. They told Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him. He said: ‘Do you not realize, you poor fellows, that he is a clever man who takes from you? Put the question to him and remain silent until he answers.’ They went to him, put questions to him, and remained silent. Sometimes he was right and sometimes he was wrong, which distressed him. [Abū Ḥanīfa] used to sit after the night prayer, and some companions would come and debate. Sufyān covered himself with his cloak and went to them as though disguised. He lay down at the side of the mosque, listening without their noticing him. When Abū Ḥanīfa’s companions, may God have mercy on him and them, came to debate with him, he answered well, as though he had been with them. They told Abū Ḥanīfa, who said: ‘Is someone here with us conveying what we say to him?’ They said: ‘No.’ Later Abū Ḥanīfa realized what was happening. Sufyān entered and lay at the side of the mosque, covered with his cloak but with his ears exposed to listen. Abū Ḥanīfa noticed him, mentioned a report, and said: ‘Saʿīd ibn Masrūq al-Thawrī, the father of this covered man, related to me.’ When Sufyān realized he had been noticed, he got up and left. Ḥāmid ibn Ādam said: I mentioned this to Yaʿlā ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṭanāfisī. He laughed and said: ‘This is well known among us.’ I mentioned it to Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd, but he said nothing, neither affirming nor denying it. He was distressed that day, so I do not know whether he failed to answer because of his distress or for some other reason.

حدثنا أبي، ومحمد بن عبد الله بن سهل، قالا: حدثنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن أحمد بن حفص، عن بشر بن يحيى، عن جرير، قال: سمعت الأعمش جاءه رجل، فسأله عن مسألة، فقال: عليك بأهل تلك الحلقة، فإنهم إذا وقعت لهم مسألة لا يزالون يديرونها حتى يصيبوا، يعني حلقة أبي حنيفة وأصحابه رحمة الله عليهم وعلى الرواة المذكورين.

My father and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sahl related to us. They said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥafṣ related to us, from Bishr ibn Yaḥyā, from Jarīr, who said: I heard al-Aʿmash when a man came and asked him a question. He said: ‘Go to the people of that circle. When a question arises for them, they keep discussing it until they reach the right answer’—meaning the circle of Abū Ḥanīfa and his companions. May God have mercy on them and on the transmitters mentioned.

And Jayhān ibn Abī al-Ḥasan related to us: Muḥammad ibn al-Fuḍayl related to us: Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī related to us: Salm ibn Sālim related to us, from Abū al-Juwayriyya, who said: I accompanied Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān, ʿAlqama ibn Marthad, Muḥārib ibn Dithār, and ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh—may God have mercy on them—and I accompanied Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him. None of those men spent his nights better than Abū Ḥanīfa—may God be pleased with him. I accompanied him for six months and never saw him lie down for a single night.

حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن سهل أبو سهل، قال: حدثنا أبو يوسف الدشتكي الرازي، قال: حدثني عبد الحميد الحماني قال: كان والد يعقوب يجيء إلى مجلس أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليه فيأخذ بيد يعقوب فيقيمه فيذهب به، فلا يلبث إلا يسيراً حتى يرجع يعقوب، فيخوض معنا، ثم يجيء والده فيقيمه فيذهب به، فلا يلبث إلا يسيراً حتى يرجع يعقوب، فجاء يوماً والده فجعل يصيح ويصيح ويقول: يعصيني هذا الولد وأنتم تعينونه، فقال له أبو حنيفة: وما تريد منه؟ قال: أريد منه أن يلزم السوق ويعول عياله، فقال له أبو حنيفة رضي الله عنه: تُكْفى هذا إن شاء الله، فقال: أبوه: لا أرضى، فقال أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه: هذا شيء آخر أنت تمنع الساعة ولدك عن التعلم فلا تعان على هذا، نحن نكفيه ما يحتاج إليه، ارجع راشداً.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sahl Abū Sahl related to us: Abū Yūsuf al-Dashtakī al-Rāzī related to us: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Ḥimmānī related to me: Yaʿqūb’s father would come to Abū Ḥanīfa’s gathering—may God have mercy on him—take Yaʿqūb by the hand, make him get up, and take him away. After only a short time Yaʿqūb would return and join our discussion. His father would come again, make him get up, and take him away; after only a short time Yaʿqūb would return. One day his father came shouting repeatedly, ‘This son disobeys me, and you help him!’ Abū Ḥanīfa said, ‘What do you want from him?’ He said, ‘I want him to stay in the marketplace and support his family.’ Abū Ḥanīfa—may God be pleased with him—said, ‘You will be spared that burden, God willing.’ His father said, ‘I am not satisfied.’ Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—said, ‘That is another matter. You are now preventing your son from learning, and you will not be helped in that. We will provide what he needs. Return rightly guided.’

Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAzīz al-Qaṭṭān al-Marwazī, ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim al-Marwazī, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sarakhsī, Abū Sahl Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sahl, Abū Suhayl Sahl ibn Bishr, and Ibrāhīm ibn Manṣūr—the Bukharans—related to us. They said: ʿAlī ibn Khashram related to us: ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Aswad ibn Yazīd, from ʿĀʾisha—may God be pleased with her: The Prophet—God bless him and grant him peace—would have intercourse with his wife, then sleep as he was, without touching water.

حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن سهل، قال: حدثنا علي بن خشرم، قال: أخبرنا عيسى بن يونس، قال: سئل أبو حنيفة عن أم الولد أسلمت في دار الحرب، ثم خرجت إلى دار الإسلام أتتزوج من ساعتها إن شاءت؟ قال: نعم، فقيل له: هل عليها عدة؟ قال: لا، وقال الأوزاعي: هي امرأة هاجرت إلى الله، وفرت بدينها إلى الإسلام، فحالها حال المهاجرات إلى الله عز وجل، لا تتزوج حتى تنقضي عدتها من مولاها، قال علي: اختار عيسى قول أبي حنيفة.
