حدثنا قيس بن أبي قيس، قال: حدثنا محمد بن حرب المروزي، قال: حدثنا إسماعيل بن حماد بن أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليهم، عن أبيه، قال: رأيت الحسن بن عمارة وأبي انتهيا إلى قنطرة، فقال له أبي: تقدم، فقال: لا أتقدم، تقدم أنت، فإنك أفقهنا وأعلمنا وأفضلنا، قال: ولما مات أبي سألنا الحسن بن عمارة بأن يتولى غسله، ففعل، فلما غسَّله، قال: رحمك الله وغفر لك لم تفطر منذ ثلاثين سنة، ولم تتوسد يمينك بالليل منذ أربعين سنة.

Qays ibn Abī Qays related to us: Muḥammad ibn Ḥarb al-Marwazī related to us: Ismāʿīl ibn Ḥammād ibn Abī Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on them—related to us, from his father, who said: I saw al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra and my father reach a bridge. My father said to him, ‘Go ahead.’ He said, ‘I will not go ahead. You go ahead, for you are the most learned of us in jurisprudence, the most knowledgeable, and the best.’ He said: When my father died, we asked al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra to undertake washing him, and he did. After washing him, he said, ‘May God have mercy on you and forgive you. You did not break your fast for thirty years, nor rest your head on your right hand at night for forty years.’

حدثنا أبو حفص عبدان بن يوسف، قال: حدثنا إبراهيم بن محمد البلخي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن حفص البلخي، عن محمد بن الحسن، قال: لما غسَّل الحسن بن عمارة أبا حنيفة رحمة الله عليهما وفرغ منه، قال: رحمك الله كنت من أفقهنا، وأعبدنا، وأزهدنا، وأجمعنا لخصال الخير، وقبرت إذ قبرتَ إلى خير وسنة، وأتعبتَ من بعدك، وفضحت القراء.

Abū Ḥafṣ ʿAbdān ibn Yūsuf related to us: Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Balkhī related to us: Muḥammad ibn Ḥafṣ al-Balkhī related to us, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan, who said: When al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra finished washing Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on them both—he said, ‘May God have mercy on you. You were among the most learned of us in jurisprudence, the most devoted in worship, the most ascetic, and those who combined the most good qualities. When you were buried, you were buried in goodness and adherence to the Sunna. You have wearied those who come after you and put the Qurʾān reciters to shame.’

حدثنا سهل بن بشر أبو سهيل، قال: أخبرنا أبو الفضل الفتح، قال: حدثنا الحسن بن صالح، قال: سمعت أبا سعد الصغاني محمد بن ميّسر، قال: سمعت أبا حنيفة وزفر رحمة الله عليهما، يقولان: جرّبنا الحسن بن عمارة رحمة الله عليه في الحديث، فوجدناه يخرج من الحديث كما يخرج الذهب الأحمر من النار.

حدثنا أحمد بن أبي صالح، قال: حدثنا حَمُّ بن نوح، قال: حدثنا أبو سعد الصغاني، قال: عامة ما سمعنا من الحسن بن عمارة سمعناه في مجلس أبي حنيفة ومسجده، وكان يجالس أبا حنيفة كثيراً، فكان يمر في خلال الكلام حديثٌ يذكره الحسن بن عمارة، فكان يقول له أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه: أَمل عليهم فيُملي علينا.

He often sat with Abū Ḥanīfa. In the course of the discussion a report would arise that al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra mentioned, and Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—would say to him, ‘Dictate it to them,’ so he would dictate it to us.

حدثنا محمد بن خزيمة القَلَّاس، قال: حدثنا زكريا بن يحيى قال: حدثنا مالك بن سليمان الهروي، أنه قال: كان الحسن بن عمارة يقع في أبي حنيفة، ويتناوله، قال: فجمع يوماً عند الأمير بالكوفة علماء الكوفة كلهم، قال: فسألهم الأمير عن مسألة، فأخطؤوا كلهم ما خلا الحسن بن عمارة، فإنه أصاب، قال: فقال أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه: أصاب الحسن، وأخطأنا نحن، قال الحسن بن عمارة: وكان مجلس مفاخرة، فلو شاء أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه أن يقيم قوله، ويردني من قولي لأمكنه، فلم يفعل، فعلمت أنه ليس فيهم أورع منه، فكان الحسن يطري بعد ذلك أبا حنيفة رحمة الله عليه ويمدحه، قال محمد بن خزيمة: فلهذا كان أصحاب الحديث يضعِّفون الحسن بن عمارة لميله إلى أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليه.

Muḥammad ibn Khuzayma al-Qallās related to us: Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā related to us: Mālik ibn Sulaymān al-Harawī related to us that he said: Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra used to disparage Abū Ḥanīfa and speak against him. He said: One day all the scholars of Kufa were assembled before the governor there. The governor asked them a question, and they all answered incorrectly except al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra, who answered correctly. Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—said, ‘Al-Ḥasan is right, and we were wrong.’ Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra said: It was a gathering in which people competed for distinction. Had Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—wished to uphold his own position and turn me from mine, he could have done so, but he did not. I therefore knew that none of them was more scrupulous than he. After that, al-Ḥasan extolled and praised Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him. Muḥammad ibn Khuzayma said: It was for this reason that the hadith scholars considered al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmāra weak: because of his inclination toward Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him.
