حدثنا يحيى بن إسماعيل بن الحسن بن عثمان، قال: سمعت جدي الحسن بن عثمان يحدث عن الحسن بن زياد، أنه كان يقول: كان مسعر بن كدام يقوم في الصلاة في ناحية المسجد، وأبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه في ناحية، وأصحابه كانوا يتفرقون في حوائجهم بعد صلاة الغَدَاة، ثم يجتمعون إليه، فيجلس لهم، فمِن بين سائل ومن بين مناظر، ويرفعون الأصوات حتى يسكتوا لكثرة ما يحتج [لهم]، فكان مسعر يقول: إن رجلاً يُسْكِن اللهُ به هذه الأصوات لعظم الشأن في الإسلام.

Yaḥyā ibn Ismāʿīl ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUthmān related to us. He said: I heard my grandfather al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUthmān relate from al-Ḥasan ibn Ziyād: He used to say: Misʿar ibn Kidām would stand in prayer at one side of the mosque, while Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him, was at another. His companions would disperse to attend to their affairs after the morning prayer, then gather around him. He would sit with them: some asking questions, others debating. They raised their voices until they fell silent because of the many arguments he presented [to them]. Misʿar used to say: ‘A man through whom God quiets these voices is indeed of great standing in Islam.’

حدثني أبو همام محمد بن خلف النسفي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن سلمة الفقيه البلخي، قال: سمعت علي بن حبيب ـ وكان من أصحاب أبي معاذ ـ، عن أبي معاذ، عن مسعر بن كدام، قال مسعر: كنت أرى أبا حنيفة يصلي الغداة، ثم يقعد في مذاكرة العلم إلى الظهر، ثم يصلي الظهر فيقعد في مذاكرة العلم إلى صلاة العصر، ثم يقعد في مذاكرة العلم إلى المغرب، ثم يصلي المغرب فيقعد في مذاكرة العلم إلى صلاة العشاء، قال مسعر: فقلت في نفسي: متى يتعبد هذا لأتعاهدنَّه الليلة، قال: فتعاهدته، فلما صلى العشاء الأخيرة دخل منزله، فلما هدأ الناس وأخذوا مضاجعهم خرج إلى المسجد، وانتصب لصلاة الليل كله، فلما كان في الوقت الذي يتحرك الناس دخل منزله، ثم خرج في الوقت الذي يخرج الناس، وقد تهيأ وسرح لحيته، ثم قعد في العلم يومه ذلك كما كان يفعل قبل ذلك، قال مسعر: قلت: إن الرجل أفرط في العمل الليلة فلأتعاهدنه الليلة الثانية، قال: فعمل مثل ما عمل في الليلة الأولى، وعمل في الغد في العلم مثل ما عمله فيما مضى، قال مسعر: فقلت في نفسي: ينبسط الرجل ليلة أو ليلتين فلأتعاهدنه الليلة الثالثة، فتعاهدته الليلة الثالثة فعمل مثل الليلتين، وعمل في الغد من العلم مثل ما كان يعمل قبل ذلك، قال أبو معاذ: قال مسعر: فقلت: لألزمنّه حتى أموت، أو يموت، قال: فلزمت حتى مات أبو حنيفة رضوان الله عليه وعلى محبيه ومتابعيه أجمعين. قال أبو معاذ: وتوفي مسعر في سجوده، فرحمة الله عليه وعلى الرواة المذكورين أجمعين.

Abū Hammām Muḥammad ibn Khalaf al-Nasafī related to me. He said: Muḥammad ibn Salama, the jurist of Balkh, related to us. He said: I heard ʿAlī ibn Ḥabīb, one of Abū Muʿādh’s companions, relate from Abū Muʿādh, from Misʿar ibn Kidām. Misʿar said: I used to see Abū Ḥanīfa pray the morning prayer, then sit discussing knowledge until noon. He would pray the noon prayer and sit discussing knowledge until the afternoon prayer, then sit discussing knowledge until sunset. He would pray the sunset prayer and sit discussing knowledge until the night prayer. Misʿar said: I thought to myself: ‘When does this man worship? I shall watch him tonight.’ I watched him. After the late night prayer he entered his home. When people had quieted down and gone to bed, he came out to the mosque and stood in prayer all night. When people began to stir, he entered his home, then came out when people usually came out, prepared and with his beard combed. He spent that day teaching as he had before. Misʿar said: I thought: ‘He went to exceptional lengths tonight. I shall watch him a second night.’ He did as he had the first night and spent the next day teaching as before. Misʿar said: I thought: ‘A man may be energetic for a night or two; I shall watch him a third night.’ I watched him a third night. He did as on the first two nights and spent the next day teaching as before. Abū Muʿādh said: Misʿar said: ‘I shall keep close to him until I die or he dies.’ He said: I remained with him until Abū Ḥanīfa died. May God be pleased with him and with all who love and follow him. Abū Muʿādh said: Misʿar died while prostrating. May God have mercy on him and on all the transmitters mentioned.

حدثنا عبد الله بن أبي أحمد الطواويسي، قال: سمعت محمد بن علي بن الحسن، سمعت عماراً، يقول: رأى مسعر بن كدام رجلاً متعطراً يمشي وذلك بالليل، فظن أنه عروس يدخل منزل امرأته، فدخل المسجد وقام في مقامه وكبّر فافتتح سورة البقرة، قال: فقلت: يبلغ النصف، فيركع فجاوز النصف، فقلت: يختم فيركع، فجاوز، فلم يزل يقرأ حتى يختم القرآن كله في ركعة، فلما فرغ من صلاته خرج من المسجد يريد منزله فلحقته فإذا هو أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه رحمة واسعة.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Aḥmad al-Ṭawāwīsī related to us. He said: I heard Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan: I heard ʿAmmār say: Misʿar ibn Kidām saw a perfumed man walking at night and thought he was a bridegroom entering his wife’s house. He entered the mosque, stood in his place, pronounced the opening magnification, and began the Sūra of the Cow. He said: I thought, ‘He will reach halfway, then bow.’ He passed halfway. I thought, ‘He will finish it, then bow.’ He went beyond it and continued reciting until he completed the entire Qurʾān in one unit of prayer. When he finished praying, he left the mosque for his home. I caught up with him and found that he was Abū Ḥanīfa. May God have abundant mercy on him.

حدثنا أحيد بن جرير بن المسيب الجوهري، قال: حدثنا إبراهيم بن مسعر بن راشد الترمذي، قال: رأى أبو نعيم رجلاً يرفع يديه عند الركوع، فلما فرغ الرجل من صلاته جذبه جذبة شديدة، وقال له: يا هذا! هذا قبة الإسلام، وكنز العلم، من رأيت من علمائها وفقهائها يفعل ذلك؟! وهل بلغك ذلك عن أصحاب النبي ﷺ ورضي عنهم الذين كانوا مثل علي بن أبي طالب، وعبد الله بن مسعود، وحذيفة بن اليمان، وعمار بن ياسر، وغيرهم، أو من أحد من التابعين أو من أتباعهم إلى يومك هذا، وقد صليت خلف مسعر بن كدام، والحسن بن صالح، وأبي حنيفة، وسفيان، وشريك، وغيرهم من مشايخ الكوفة وعامة من لقيت فلم أرهم يرفعون أيديهم إلا في التكبيرة الأولى فمن أنت حتى ترفع؟!! امضِ لا جُزيت خيراً.

حدثنا أحمد بن أبي صالح البلخي، قال: سمعت يعقوب بن إسحاق بن أبي إسرائيل، يقول: حدثني عمرو بن محمد الأزدي، قال: حدثنا الأصمعي، قال: قلت لأبي يوسف ـ وذكرنا الأماني ـ: لقد بلغ الله بك، فهل تمنيت قط أكثر مما أنت فيه؟ قال: نعم تمنيت أن لي جمال ابن أبي ليلى، وزهد مسعر بن كدام، وفقه أبي حنيفة، قال: فذكرت ذلك لأمير المؤمنين الرشيد، فقال: ما تمنى أبو يوسف أكبر من الخلافة.

He said: Aḥmad ibn Abī Bakr al-Balkhī related to us, from Shaddād ibn Ḥakīm, who said: Misʿar ibn Kidām said: I watched Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him, in the Sacred Mosque. After the night prayer, he stood praying and kept the whole night alive. I thought: ‘A man may be energetic for one night.’ I watched him the second night, and he did the same, standing through the night. I watched him a third night, and he stood until morning. I said: ‘He is a man devoted to worship.’

حدثنا إبراهيم بن علي الترمذي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن حبّان، عن خلّاد بن يحيى بن صفوان، قال: قال مسعر بن كدام: أتيت أبا حنيفة وهو يصلي قائماً، فقمت ملياً لا يلتفت إلي، فأخذت حصاة فوضعتها على ثوبه، ثم مضيت فذهبت ما شاء الله، [ثم أتيته] فإذا الحصاة لم تتحرك، ثم قال مسعر: طلبنا مع أبي حنيفة الكلام فغلبَنا، وأخذ معنا في الزهد فغلبَنا، وأخذ معنا في الفقه فجاء بما ترَون.

He said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥibbān related to us, from Khallād ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ṣafwān, who said: Misʿar ibn Kidām said: I came to Abū Ḥanīfa while he was standing in prayer. I stood for a long while, but he did not turn toward me. I took a pebble, placed it on his garment, and left. I went away for as long as God willed. [Then I returned to him], and the pebble had not moved. Misʿar then said: ‘We pursued theological disputation with Abū Ḥanīfa, and he surpassed us. He joined us in asceticism and surpassed us. He joined us in jurisprudence and produced what you see.’

حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى الرازي، قال: حدثنا الفضل بن العباس التُّسْتَري، قال: حدثني حوثرة بن [محمد]، قال: حدثني محمد بن بشر، قال: سمعت مسعر بن كدام، يقول: كان أبو حنيفة اتخذ لباساً مرتفعاً من جميع ثياب البدن، القميص، والسراويل، والرداء، والعمامة، قيمته أكثر من ألف وخمسمائة درهم، فإذا صلى العشاء الآخرة وهدأ الناس، نزع لباسه الذي يكون عليه، ولبس هذا اللباس المرتفع [وتعطر]، وقام إلى الصلاة حتى أصبح فقيل له: إنما يلبس الناس مثل هذا اللباس إذا أتوا سلطاناً، أو اجتمعوا في مجمع عظيم، قال: التزين لله أولى من التزين للناس.

He said: I heard Misʿar ibn Kidām say: Abū Ḥanīfa had acquired a fine complete outfit: shirt, trousers, cloak, and turban, worth more than fifteen hundred dirhams. After the late night prayer, when people had quieted down, he would remove the clothes he was wearing, put on this fine outfit [and perfume himself], and stand praying until morning. He was told: ‘People wear such clothes when visiting a ruler or attending a great gathering.’ He said: ‘Adorning oneself for God is more fitting than adorning oneself for people.’

حدثنا محمد بن قدامة الزاهد البلخي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن علاء أبو كريب، قال: حدثنا أبو يحيى الحماني، عن أبي حنيفة، ومسعر، عن سلمة بن كهيل، عن أبي الزعراء رحمة الله عليهم، عن عبد الله رضي الله عنه، قال: يخرج الله أقواماً من أهل الإيمان من النار بعد أن يعذبهم فيها بشفاعة محمد صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم، فلا يبقى إلا من ذكر الله في القرآن ﴿مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ﴾ إلى آخر الآية.

أخبرنا أحمد بن محمد، عن عبد الله بن أحمد بن بهلول، قال: هذا كتاب جدي إسماعيل بن حماد، فقرأت فيه: حدثني أبي، عن أبي حنيفة، ومسعر رحمة الله عليهم، وعبد الرحمن المسعودي، عن عطية العوفي، عن أبي سعيد رضي الله عنه في قوله: ﴿عَسَىٰ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا﴾ قال: المقام المحمود: الشفاعة.

حدثنا إبراهيم بن عمروس بن محمد، قال: حدثنا يعقوب بن شيبة السدوسي، قال: حدثنا عمر بن حماد بن أبي حنيفة، قال: حدثنا أبي، عن أبيه، والقاسم بن معن، ومسعر، والمسعودي، عن القاسم بن عبد الرحمن، عن أبيه، عن عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: «إذا اختلف البيعان والسلعة قائمة، فالقول قول البائع أو يترادَّان»، لم يذكر المسعودي عن أبيه.
