Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAzīz al-Qaṭṭān al-Marwazī related to us. He said: Nūḥ ibn Anas and ʿAlī ibn Sulaymān related to us. They said: Mihrān ibn Abī ʿUmar related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Abū Sufyān, from Abū Naḍra—God have mercy on them—from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, God be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, said: “The key to prayer is ablution; the declaration of God’s greatness enters one into its sacred restrictions, and the salutation releases one from them. Between every two units, give the salutation”—meaning voluntary prayer—“and no prayer suffices without the Opening of the Book and something along with it.”

Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAzīz related to us. He said: ʿAlī ibn Sulaymān related to us. He said: Mihrān ibn Abī ʿUmar related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm—God have mercy on them— that when Ibn Masʿūd, God be pleased with him, related from the Prophet, peace be upon him, he would be seized by trembling until the chattering of his teeth could be heard, out of fear of having added anything to the Prophet’s words, peace be upon him, or omitted anything.
